Marathon Man

I finished watching Pyrokinesis at 5:30 am. and thoroughly enjoyed it. Pyrokinesis is also known as Crossfire and is aflame with fun. Think if Charlie McGee* had grown into an adult and started punishing bad guys by incinerating them.

*Drew Barrymore's character in Firestarter.

Here is the rest of the lineup:

I caught a few hours of ZZZs and woke up around 9:30ish for the last of Juon: The Grudge. I've seen it a few times, so that gave me a chance to have breakfast and shower.

Next up was "World Apartment Horror (1991), a comedy about some Yakuza types who try to evict some foreigner renters so they can have the building for themselves. Lots of yelling and a ghost joined in the melee. You can give this one a pass. Not even worth linking to but the manga is worth checking out.

Evil Dead Trap (1988) is just bloody awful with an emphasis on the bloody. It has a Tubular Bells soundtrack that shows up when ever the gore starts.

Guzoo (1986) is only 40 minutes long and has lots of oozing tendrils attacking young ladies. Even so, it is pretty darn good. You can check it out for yourself here:

I'd seen "As the Gods Will" (2007) in the cinema and though confusing was a ton o' fun. It was nice to catch it with subs again so I could follow along. That ending though sets it up for a sequel that I don't think ever materialized. You find the Movie Pamphlet analyzed here a few years back. (Thank you dailymotion for your devotion. Watch it in its entirety at that link.)

"One Cut of the Dead" is unique and is worth checking out. I've seen it before in the cinema and with subtitles so I didn't pay much attention while it was on.

I've been wanting to watch this one for a long time and "A Slit-Mouthed Woman" was SO good! Some very troubling scenes of child abuse but the makeup, acting and everything else was topnotch. (Hey, some more dailymotion commotion has it for you!

We interrupt this marathon for a word from our Yokai Sponsor.

口裂け女 (くちさけおんな) or Kuchisake Onna who "is the ghost of a woman who was mutilated and has come back to wreak vengeance on the world. Her name comes from the deep, bloody gash which runs across her face, grinning from ear to ear. She appears at night to lone travelers on the road, covering her grizzly mouth with a cloth mask, a fan, or a handkerchief."

 Kuchisake onna
sneaks up on her victims in the dark and asks them if they think she is beautiful: “Watashi, kirei?” If the victim answers yes, she pulls off her mask and reveals a red, blood-dripping, grotesque mouth. Then she asks in a grisly voice if they still think she is beautiful: “Kore demo?” If her victim answers no or screams in terror, she slashes him from ear to ear in an imitation of her own mutilation. If he lies and answers yes a second time, she walks away—only to follow her target home and slaughter him brutally that night.

The spirits of the dead who were killed in particularly violent manners—abused wives, tortured captives, defeated enemies—often do not rest well. The kuchisake onna is thought to be one such woman. However, during the Edo period, a large number of kuchisake onna attacks were blamed on shape-changed kitsune playing pranks on young men. During the 20th century, the blame began to be placed on ghosts, serial killers, and simple mass hysteria. This resulted in an explosion of kuchisake onna sightings over Japan. Over the years, clever young people claim to have outsmarted kuchisake onna by delivering quick, confusing answers, or by throwing money or hard candy at them. This buys enough time to escape from the kuchisake onna’s wrath and lose her in the darkness.

As you can see, I saved you the trouble of going to Yokai.com and copied it all for you.

Oh No! Hunger Games Battle Royale has just started and it's a Director's Cut. Ciao for now.

Royal Battle.

Instead of a pamphlet today, I happened to find a copy of the soundtrack for  バトル・ロワイアル (Battle Royale). (If you want to see the actual pamphlet, click that link.) I started listening to it on the way home and was astounded as to how good it is.

And it comes with its own little pamphlet after all.

Here's a hint as to what it sounds like.

Not a bad way to spend 380 yen!

If you've never seen it and plan to, DON'T watch this.

Today's snack. Not really a snack, just something I'll have for dinner tomorrow.
(Michael, you know that even though there is a pumpkin on the package, you don't have to buy it.
Quiet you.)

I spent a little too much catching the entire set of these Gloomy Bears. I couldn't resist! The colours were labelled as Horror Orange, Horror Purple, Horror Black, and Horror Pink!

Here I am in action: (If the link works, that is.)

I'll leave you with this query. What movie do you think this DVD cover is? (Japanese readers need not try.)

Give up? It's

SPOILER...

SPOILER...

Lord of the Flies! The 1963 movie of a bunch of boys left to their own wits to survive on an island. I think Battle Royale owes it just a bit.

Let's Check In With Chiaki!

Advisory: if anyone checks out this post, I am certain there were some photos or YouTubes attached. No idea where the heck they are now.

We all remember our favourite psychotic school girl, 栗山千明 Chiaki Kuriyama, from Battle Royale

and Kill Bill, don't we?

Since then she's become a Youkai ,

a huckster for makeup and other goodies such as the Uniqlo Brat-op,

a mooner

and a Geisha!

Now she's become a full-on J-Pop star! When the heck did that happen?

Keep on surprising us, Chiaki!

Battle Royale With Cheese.

Okay, did you watch that? Now you have the basic premise for today's Halloweeny post. Andy and I watched バトル・ロワイアル together back in our Soma days and we were treated to a running commentary by a young pup named Jessie who was helping out at the school and had learned Japanese in High School. After about 20 minutes of his constant narration, we asked him to be quiet and we watched the gruesome proceedings with rapt attention.
(Aside: I've never met anyone who likes the sound of his own voice more than Jessie. Andy and I were really rather cruel to him, talking over his head and then giggling about it.)

But apart from that viewing, I have never seen it, so I'm not completely sure of the dialogue but the premise is brilliant. Sort of Lord of the Flies meets The Most Dangerous Game meets 1984 meets Fast Times at Ridgemont High. (Just kidding about the last one, but be sure to click that link to watch the 1932 film starring most of the King Kong crew!)

Thus since I'm no expert on the movie I'll just offer up some pics from the 2 movie programs I picked up for a buck a piece.

Starting off with a "Do your best" speech by Beat Takeshi, it quickly gets weirder and more and more violent.

Of course, all you Kill Bill fans will recognize Chiaki Kuriyama as Takako Chigusa. Though I've seen a few of the other faces pop up here and there, none ring a resounding bell.

If you're wondering where the cheese from the title comes from, I'd recommend BR II!

He-ah, he-ah, my he-ah, he-ah!

I just saw a very disturbing trailer for a new Japanese horror movie called エクステ (EXTE). It wasn't the horror of the hair extensions that kill young girls that I found odd, the disturbing part was the song sung by the lead kook, (大杉漣 Ren Osugi). If you go to the homepage and click on the trailers, go to the second trailer.

The first one is a little creepy, but the second one is hilariously creepy.
go to EXTE for details, but here is that dopey trailer for you:

It stars one of my favourite young actresses, Chiaki Kuriyama, whom you may know better as GoGo Yubari in Kill Bill. I've also seen her on a tv series, エコエコアザラク(Eko Eko Azarak=Wizard of Darkness), in movies: 呪怨 (Ju-on=The Grudge), バトル・ロワイアル (Batoru Rowaiaru=Battle Royale) and 妖怪大戦争 (Yokai Daisenso=The Great Yokai War) and tons of commercials.

Unfortunately this movie won't be released in Sendai, so I may have to venture out of town to go see it. But it looks like it'll be a really hairy flick.

Let the Battle begin!

This is an intriguing ceremony called 対面式 "taimenshiki" which roughly translates as "face-to-face meeting". The junior 1st year students 後輩 (kouhai) face their superiors 先輩 (2nd and 3rd senpai), two representatives make a speech, then they bow to one another.

Last year, I made the snide comment that this is the opportunity for kouhai to choose their bully and the senpai to choose their victim. This year, it reminded me of the movie "Battle Royale" and I fully expected the vice principle to shoot one of the chattier students in the forehead and then have the gym teachers proceed to hand out various forms of weaponry, from kitchen knives to machete; pea shooters to bazookas (as in the movie). Ultimately I was disappointed that this didn't happen, but on the other hand, if it had occurred, I'd be out of a job.
