Beware of the Red Lantern Boy!

I started off this evening with a simple blog about a boy and ended up (down) several rabbit holes leading to what is Sendai's only Yokai!* Chouchin Kouzou (Lantern Priest Boy) is a tween lad with a cherry-red face who shows up in an area where a horrid murder has taken place. The good news is that he's a fairly benign yokai who means you no harm, just wants to freak you out by walking in front of you and staring you down.

This video does a pretty good job of depicting the situation.

The music is eerie, the actress is a cutie (Mai Horai, based on a few of the commenters, she has a following) and the boy is suitably creepy.

Now we get to the good part, I've scammed his origin from Yokai Finder and the lad "lives" downtown.

Origin: Chōchin kozō are associated with a particular neighborhood in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture: the area of Aoba Ward between Tsutsumidori Amamiya Machi and Kamisugi. The first sightings took place in the summer during the early 18th century, after a man horribly murdered his wife and her body dumped in that vicinity. The yōkai were thought to be somehow connected to the ghost of the murdered woman.

Here's a blurb from Wikipedia that narrows down his address.

It is said to have appeared in Tsutsumi-dori, in the northern part of the castle town of Sendai Castle (currently Tsutsumi-dori Amemiya-cho and Uesugi 1-2-chome, Aoba -ku, Sendai City 仙台市青葉区堤通雨宮町および上杉1~2丁目. Maybe you'll have better luck with Google Maps than I did.) Its appearance is that of a boy around 12 or 13 years old in human years, but its face is bright red, and it is often likened to the color of ground cherries.

When a person is walking down a rainy road at night, this lantern boy appears from behind, passes the person, then stops, turns around, and stares at the person. The person who is passed becomes suspicious and passes in front of the lantern boy and continues walking, at which point the lantern boy passes them again and stops. The lantern boy repeats this behavior without causing any particular harm to humans, and after a repetition, he disappears.

There is also a theory that the location where the Lantern Boy appears is the place where an unjust murder took place on July 15th during the Shōtoku era (1711-1715 ).

This depiction is by Gegege artist Shigeru Mizuki, (above) and he has his own statue in Tokyo, (below).

*You ninny! You wrote about Sendai's other Yokai, Kashikobuchi, here!

I spent so much time on Lantern Boy, that what follows will be a truncated version.

A while back, I wandered through the book section of e-Beans and came across the Junji Ito display. I don't want to spend full price on any manga, but it does have a nice selection.

I don't have covers for any Green Lantern books, nor have I ever read any Red Lantern book, but just for fun here is the Red Lantern Oath:

With blood and rage of crimson red, ripped from a corpse so freshly dead, together with our hellish hate, we'll burn you all, that is your Fate!

Instead, let's use a different comic cover. I haven't read it yet. Is that a Red Lantern?

Finally, let's take a look at a Gatcha. Nothing particularly Lantern-related, so how about some pumped up bunnies just in time for Moon-Viewing time.

Hey, the Wonderful Wonderblog has some Halloween tidbits to check out. See ya tomorrow!

In Brightest Day...

After a full day of bridge playing (something I haven't done in ages), I popped into the local Big Boy for dindin. They have a special of Lamb Chops and though tiny, it was tasty. It came with a spicy mustard and a basil-salt dip but it could have used some mint jelly.

This Big Boy just happens to be located next to a 2nd Street and though there wasn't much worth picking up inexpensively, I did find a pretty cool John Stewart as Green Lantern paperweight. Today had winds upwards of 50 kph so this weight would have its work cut out for it to hold down any wayward paper.

Justice League is my favourite of all the DC cartoons (in a few weeks, we'll finally get Young Justice so maybe I'll change my tune) and John does a great job as GL.

If and when they make a Justice League movie, I hope they use this version. As long as Guy Gardner shows up for a cameo, that is.

You Blockhead.

If there is ever going to be a Justice League movie, I want it to star the Justice League of Blockheads! One of my roving reporters pointed these capsules out to me and we've only ever seen them in one machine out in Iwanuma. I have one complete set and a few doubles of these put out by Kitan and the lineup includes スーパーマン バットマン フラッシュ グリーン・ランタン and ワンダー・ウーマン. The only disappointment for me is a lack of Aquaman.

 フラッシュ
 グリーン・ランタン
 ワンダー・ウーマン
 スーパーマン
 バットマン
I'd expect the movie to look something like this:

In Brightest Day...

On Monday, I met my workmates and we all travelled to Tokyo together on the company's dime. We had a few hours of free time so I went to Shinjuku with coworker Axel. I knew the trip was going to work out well when I espied this store:

We parted ways after that so I took the opportunity to go see "Green Lantern" which was promised but never arrived at the local theatres. It took a bit of searching to find the place but I eventually did and was glad I did. Though it does have its faults, I may be the only one in the blogosphere to enjoy it. (As buddy Alex states it, "You and Larry King...you never meet a movie you didn't like.) Watch a preview of it and then I'll comment on it more...

Hal Jordan has always been a bit of a dick and no one plays a smarmy dick better than Ryan Reynolds so I don't disagree with casting him in the role. I thought the unknown (to me) woman playing Carol Ferris was very good and brought a believability to the character. I do hope she turns into Star Sapphire in a future movie (if there is one.) Speaking of a future movie, if Sinestro doesn't go up against the entire GL Corps, I'll be disappointed. It was great to see Abin Sur, Kilowog (You Poozer), Tomar Re and the other Corps members, we really need to see more of them. The special effects were superlative, definitely a good use of 3D for a change. I liked Parallax better than the similar Galactus, it looked far more evil. If they could have removed the subplot about he and his dad, it'd be better but otherwise, I have only minor quibbles (like why was Amanda Waller so skinny?)

Fortunately there were no goods of note to buy, for I'd already spent 2100¥ on the movie. I think I'll wait until the GL Pamphlet is in the 100 yen bin at BookOff. I couldn't leave empty handed, so I picked up a Pooh-san Clear file, cuz it's all retro.

I also liked the Kamen-Rider bike and characters they had in the lobby and can't wait for Captain America & PotA!

After the movie, I wandered back to Tokyo station but not before seeing some nuclear protesters & some knickers.

I met up with pals Mark & Andy before I rejoined my colleagues and we shared a quick beer and chat.

Then I went on a boat ride...(Stay tuned tomorrow.)

Pie In The Sky!

Since I have only insignificant others, I won't be giving out any White Day chocolates today. So instead, let's celebrate 3/14 as Einstein's birthday or better yet...
π Day. Since I missed out on Square Root Day (3/3/9), I'm getting the jump on all physicist wannabees with an early post on PI Day. What better way than to present a few comic book covers featuring PIES?!

Famous fruity fastman's foil, The Pied Piper.

Kewpies!

Sweety Pie vs Cutie Pie!

Supes as the Pied Piper of Steel!

FYI, in case you didn't know, that's Pieface holding onto Green Lantern there.

To finish off, let's take a look at that expert Pie thrower, Soupy Sales!

Green Lantern's Might!

While rummaging through my belongings, I found my Power Ring signed by no less a luminary than Green Lantern's creator, Marty Nodell. I'd bought it from this incredibly charming (and not-so-busy) gentleman decades ago at one of my infrequent forays to the pique of geek, a Comic Book Convention.

As expected, I have a Green Power Ring for I "have the ability to overcome fear" (or some such nonsense.) You can find out your Power-ring Colour if interested.
