My Just Deserts.

Today's viewing:

‘Giant Things in the Desert’ – THE MONOLITH MONSTERS (1957) • THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD (1957) • THE BLACK SCORPION (1957) • THE MONSTER OF PIEDRAS BIANCAS (1959) • THEM! (1954) • TARANTULA (1955) • THE GIANT GILA MONSTER (1959)

I own THE BLACK SCORPION and THEM! and I've recently seen TARANTULA (which is on in the background as I type this.) I've never seen THE MONOLITH MONSTERS and really liked it. The two MONSTER movies were not great though the monsters were pretty good. THE GIANT GILA MONSTER had some cool hot-rods in it, but that's about it.

While I was watching these, I went through a DVD Collector's box and photographed its contents. Here we go.

Here's the back cover.

And a translation of that blurb.

Best extra in the bunch is this replica of the original movie pamphlet.

I love the little drawing of Dr. Serizawa.

Next up are several reprints of a half-cut poster, a speed poster, a Toho press sheet, a "King Kong vs. Godzilla" speed poster, a "Shin-Godzilla" flyer, a "Shin-Godzilla" photo news story. (That's how they are translated, not sure if the English is reproduced well. You should be able to figure out which is which.)

The coolest extra is a reproduction of a March 1955 issue of Boku-ra which features the entire story in a manga style. I shan't show it in its entirety, only the pages with Gojira.

Notice how he is more dinosaur-ian here.

The DVD itself is only in Japanese of course and has very few extras. Although it does show the first five episodes of Godzilla Island!

I wish I had bought multiple copies of this when it first came out in 2016. There are 61 volumes of Godzilla All Movie DVD Collector's Box (click to see them all) and I have about a dozen of them.

A while ago, I scored two binders that I guess you can fill with these extras. They have about 25 sleeves each to stuff stuff in.

One of these days, I'll stuff them.

Coffee and Cookies and Kaiju.

Day 17 of GOvember finds me in a pleasant state for a change.

Sure it was a gloomy rainy day all day but as I type this now, it's serene and peaceful.

The morning started out great, I found a Family Mart that wasn't sold out of Godzilla coffee cups.

After work, I found a binder at a Bookoff for two bucks.

And I popped into Mandai to see if I could win a stuffed Goji. No such entity. BUT, there was a box of cookies...

It took a few tries but I was ultimately successful.

And you get a large sticker (1 of 6)

The cookies themselves weren't to my taste, so my students next week will get a treat.

Uh oh. A new Godzilla Kuji starts tomorrow! Caveat Emptor!!

I've just completed watching two Godzilla movies and am now ready to deliberate. Movie One was Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2 which includes a special guest appearance by Rodan (ラドン) who has been caring for an egg. Whoa! It hatches and it's not her baby, it's in fact Baby Godzilla! Godzilla and Rodan have a battle at one point and destroy Sendai Station!! Woohoo, nice to see the hometown get a mention.

Scammed from Wikizilla:

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

After Rodan transformed into Fire Rodan, he began flying south from Adonoa Island at high speed, with one of the cities he was sighted over being Sendai. Rodan flew low over Sendai Station, triggering several massive explosions as he continued on his journey to intercept and rescue BabyGodzilla.

Check it out for yourself!

Well, the MechaGodzilla kills Godzilla; Rodan dies; Rodan's essence sprinkles over Godzilla; Godzilla is re-energized. Then Godzilla walks off into the sunset with his son in tow. Happy ending!

Movie two is a treat, featuring my second favourite Kaiju, Anguirus! Before discovering Godzilla et al. I adored dinosaurs and my all-time fave was Ankylosaurus. No wonder, I took a liking to his irradiated cousin. Anyway, Godzilla kills Anguirus and then gets buried in ice at the end of the movie. Oh well.

Isn't he adorable?

Okay, I'm off to bed, I'm going to Morioka tomorrow to see if I can sell some stuff, so I can afford other stuff!

Just the Facts, Ma'am.

Since I first saw this advertised several weeks ago, I knew I had to get it. Especially since it is only 299 yen and the first set of Fact Files comes with a binder!

The binder is separated by tabs, I think you can figure out what is covered by each of the tabs.

I didn't properly photograph the title for the above, it refers to "Cosmic". "Real Marvel" below refers to the Creators and Evolution of Marvel Comics.

These are the tab headers. I do like the use of Captain Marvel for Cosmic.

It starts with a full-page spread, highlighting the highlights.

I'm only going to showcase features that fall within the realm of the "Silver Age", from 1961-1986.

Marvelous!

Who else but Wolverine should be showcased in X-Men for the first issue of Fact Files?

Some iconic Silver Age Avengers covers.

FF #1 with the first appearance of the FF.

Marvel Knights has our favourite ninjess, Elektra.

Hmm. I wonder why the Infinity Gauntlet was used prominently in the Cosmic section.

One of my favourite Spidey villains, the Lizard.

Steve Ditko, asleep at his desk.

For the next issue comes the inevitable price increase to 680 yen though apparently it includes a present.

Finally, there is an ad for a set of Badges featuring iconic covers. I've only seen them sold at one venue and they are close to 5 bucks, so I haven't picked any up yet.

I'll let you know what happens in the next installment!
