Hark The Herald.

While searching for a News item for my Advanced News class, I espied this entry in Yahoo Canada. After last weeks odd debacle when one student defended the allocation of Disaster funds to finance Whaling, I decided to go with something a little more light-hearted. So what is more Christmassy than a Snow Angel? Or a Butterfly? Or a Mustache? Call it what you wish and chalk it up to Pareidolia but it sure is purty!

Well, my students got a kick out of it and you can always wander over to Bad Astronomy to learn a few more details about it if you wish.

I got so hung up on posting pics of Santa with kiddies & ladies yesterday, I neglected to include him in all his glory.

I would've posted something more substantial but I started watching Jeeves & Wooster starring the Doctors Wyatt & House.

Tanabata.

I've mentioned the Star Festival before and today is the traditional day (in all Japan except Sendai) when we celebrate the star-crossed lovers meeting across the Milky Way. As usual, it's rainy in Sendai so we can't see Vega and Altair making whoopee but hopefully it is clear enough in Tokyo for them to witness the blessed event. Check this out for the entire story.

Here is the traditional Tanabata song, sing along...

笹の葉 さらさら Sasa no ha sara sara
軒端に ゆれる Nokiba ni yureru
お星さま きらきら Ohoshi-sama kira kira
金 銀 砂子Kin gin sunago

Sendai holds its Tanabata festival next month (8/8) so I hope to report it again.

Zombie Alphabet!

One of my favourite bloggers, Bad Astronomy now has the dubious honour of being a Geek of the Week. (Speaking of Astronomy, the はやぶさ Hayabusa probe has gathered up some space dust...Great, one more thing for me to be allergic to!)

The one who knighted him is Len Peralta who has created the wondrous Zombie Alphabet. I'll be sure to use it in my lessons come Halloween!

In the interim, here's a couple of Pixar Pix featuring a few Incorporated Monsters.

A Jemm Of Wisdom.

It was a nice sunny day today, so of course I spent it in a stuffy room with a bunch of stuffy bridge players, came third/eleven! En route home, I encountered a little professorial type with two giant telescopes offering a free view of the heavens. I've met such amateur astronomers before when I got to see Venus, but this guy offered up something truly amazing. He had a shot of Saturn and everything was aligned up so perfectly that you could see the rings perfectly. It was magnificent and if I hadn't seen it with my own peepers, I would swear it was fake. He also had the half moon lined up, certainly not as dramatic, but cool nonetheless. Alas, my phone doesn't take the best celestial photos.

He gave myself and another eager witness a couple of his own photos and here they are!

While my mind is on the stars, here is May's Sky Map as scammed (scanned) from Skymaps which you can always download yourself for free!

In case you're wondering about this post's title, it refers to the awesome Jemm, Son of Saturn!

Fly Me To The Moon.

Because it's 母の日 or Haha no hi/ Mother's Day, I sent my mom's name into orbit!

You can do so too by clicking here and entering your mom's name. Anyone's name that you enter will be entered onto a microchip and sent to the moon! Since my mom has been in a hospital bed for a decade, I don't think she'll be able to make the trip herself, so this is the next best thing.

Happy Mother's Day!

I Couldn't Bear to Eat It.

Valentine's Day is coming soon, so I'm putting in a request for one of these. I so want to eat its head!

I already have some beetle larvae on order. Scrumdillyishus! (If facsimile chocolate larvae are not your cup of tea, check this out for the real thing! Spoiler alert: it's pretty gross!)

In some non-chocolate related news, Bloggety-blog-blog-blog has another couple of great link-dumps. My near-favourite is this link about a Happy Face on Mars, but dig a little further and you'll find this awesome nebula giving you the finger.

Doesn't NORAD Have Anything Better to Do?

On Christmas Eve, I checked out the news occasionally to see what progress Santa was making on his rounds. When we were kids, the local news would use radar footage of a bleeping sleigh flying through the clouds. I used this useful tidbit in one of my lessons and my students were quite fascinated by it. So I took a few pics off the screen and here they are. I think using CGI and NORAD takes a bit of the mystery out of the whole deal, don't you?

New Moon, You Saw Me Standing Alone...

(the Wheel of Dharma)

Actually, I wasn't alone on this, the first new moon of the summer, which according to Buddhists is the Festival of Vesak. On Vesak Day, Buddhists all over the world commemorate three great events: The birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Gautama Buddha. Buddha's birthday is celebrated in most of South Asia on the first moon in May, but in Japan, they do so during Hanamatsuri (flower festival) on April 9th. So today is ... I'm not really sure what was celebrated today, but it sure was fun.

The graduating class of last year show up (all of them dressed to the nines in the fashions and hair styles of Japan) and there's a candle service, dancers (current students dressed in Indian sari), dull speeches (including mine...I rendered a version of the Sesame Street theme) and a buffet feast.

All in all, a nice little romp and it was good to be in an air conditioned room on this 30C day.
