Creepy Sticker Time!

I went to Hillside Mall and there is a Candy Shop there called a Dagashiya, a traditional type of store that dates back to the Meiji age. (That link links to the top ten Dagishiya including a cool one in Sendai's S-Pal.) I didn't get any sweets yet I did score some awesome spooky stickers.

There are several doubles, so I shall give them away in a contest!

Each of them has the phrase カードネムリ (Card nemuri) written upon them. Nemuri means smoke, so maybe these were originally Tobacco cards. I dunno.

 

 

 

 

 

This is what the obverse of the card looks like. That red streak in the middle is a strip of glue so you can attach it somewhere.

Gee, there are only 15 different ones, that means there are many duplicates since I bought a book of fifty. If anyone would like one, let me know in the comments and I'll send you a little care package with a sticker and one or two (or three) other goodies within.

Sticking to a creepy theme, I discovered a Gatcha machine with Minion Monsters within.

I only wanted the Creature yet after several tries, I was unsuccessful. I finally got one and completed a set in the interim.

I noticed that they have crept into the grocery store as well. I didn't pick up any snacks of theirs yet, I may do so later.

Today's Kemono Friend is a canine cryptid called イヌガミギョウブ  or Inugami Gyoubu.

I'm not sure why it says "808" on her flask so I'm going to pretend that it says "BOB" and is thus related to the Minions above.

While at the Hillside Mall, which coincidentally is located on the side of a hill, I took a photo of the surroundings. (You may want to click upon the pic to embiggen it.)

There is a toy store there that sells stuff really cheaply and they just happened to have some new Funko Mystery Minis. I bought several Justice League and a few Star Wars ones but they also had Dr. Seuss and Coco.

Yay, I got Horton!
(Of course, I checked the weight of all the boxes and chose the heaviest one but don't tell anyone.)

I was worried that I might not get a skeletonized character but fortunately I snagged Bony-Coco.

For a buck, I took a chance at a Pint-Sized Heroes set of Snow White. I wanted to get a villain and not a Dopey Dopey, and Woohoo!, I scored the Queen as crone.

A pretty good trip after all!

CONTEST!!

Canada Night At Ernie's.

After a nice dinner at Rose Garden (thanks for tieing my ties,dude), I popped over to Ernie's in the company of DJ Mokugohan who dazzled us with his ipod set (I remember when he poohpoohed those who "spun" via computer and not by actually scratching vinyl, times change) of "Basic Base Bass". Best song, "Mike Jones" remix! (I also liked the tune to which Alex & I recited "Green Eggs & Ham".)

It's good to be back in the swing of things. While we were there, there were only 7 lads (5 of them were Canucks) and two lasses and I managed to monopolize the dames. While chatting up Kaori*, I heard the 3 little words that every gaijin dreads to hear, "Teach me English!"

*My Oyaji Gaggu for "Kaori"...I like Pepsi Zero. Zero Kaori (Calorie).

I ended up quaffing two more brew at my local Billiards/Darts bar and getting my ass sorely kicked at both games.

Great news: we now have a venue for Halloween (Ernie's), I got a few more ties tied & I think I've figured out my Halloween costume this year!
Bad news: I stole someone's umbrella by mistake. But it's a nice one, so I might keep it. Karma will be disappointed.

Seuss Rotolo.

Suze Rotolo was an ex-girlfriend of Bob Dylan and is necessary in order to make an obscure link to Dr. Seuss.

If you have any interest in hearing some works of Dr. Seuss to be sung in the style of Bob Dylan, than you need go no further than here.

My favourite is Green Eggs and Ham, because I used that book to teach my kiddies back when I lived in 相馬 (Soma ...the town, not the drug, though some would argue that they are both sleep-inducing).

One word of warning, Dylan-Seuss does get a bit monotonous, so it's best to put this on in the background while you're doing something else, like jack-hammering.

Now where can I get Seuss sung by Tom Waits or Neil Young?

Horton hears a だれ.

The lighter side...of Dr. Seuss (Pronounced "Soice" by the way) includes Green Eggs and Ham, The Grinch and Cat in the Hat to name but a few of his creations. Apart from the Chuck Jones produced Grinch from the 60's, and a few Cat in the Hat and Horton specials, there had been almost no live action forays into his work.

The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T was the only one to date written by him and using several of his backgrounds. It is possible that the character of Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons is based in part on the character of Dr. Terwilliker. Not only are their surnames similar (Terwilliger), but Sideshow Bob's accent and countenance bear a superficial resemblance to Hans Conried's performance, and both characters have a nemesis named Bart.










After his death in 1991, his wife refused to license his characters to Hollywood until she saw a certain Jim Carrey perform and allowed The Grinch to be made, provided he play the role. She later released The Cat in the Hat into the fold, under the condition that Mike Myers play the role. I didn't see it, but really with Seuss's source material, you shouldn't have to rely on fart jokes.


















The next big event will be an all CGI version of Horton Hears a Who. I always loved this story (a possible allegory for atomic war) and if the final result looks anything like these two stills, I have high hopes for it.

It's the Surreal thing.

The weird side... of the good doctor wasn't all freaky propaganda. He also has numerous examples of surreal artwork that is leagues away from his kiddie books. Here are a few samples:

Uncle SamIam.

The dark side of...Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his career as a little known editorial cartoonist in the 1920s. Here are some of the political cartoons he wrote between 1941 and 1943. They are EXTREMELY racist but were merely the propagandized voice of the times.

Our Job in Japan (1945) was written and directed by Dr. Seuss. It was a training film for soldiers who would occupy Japan after the war. Our Job In Japan was shown to the troops sent to occupy post-war Japan. It explained that Japanese people are not inherently evil, just brain washed by religion and cultural into becoming killers. There was still hope for them.

He also wrote, along with Warner Brothers' animation department, a character named Private SNAFU. Snafu (Situation Normal, All Fucked Up) was created by Frank Capra, and voices were done by Mel Blanc (Bugs Bunny). He always got into trouble and created more harm than good. Through his irresponsible behavior, Snafu demonstrates to soldiers what not to do while at war.
