Yesterday, Priest boys, today the Yokai are actual Priests. Such as this 岩魚坊主 (いわなぼうず), Iwana Bouzu or Char Priest. (Char is a fishy. Salvelinus leucomaenis)

Iwana bōzu are enormous iwana, a kind of river fish, that have turned into yōkai. They walk upright on two legs like humans and dress in Buddhist priest robes. They are found by mountain streams where people fish for iwana and other river fish.

Iwana bōzu appear out of nowhere and ask people who are fishing to stop and go home. They usually approach people catching more fish than they need to survive rather than those who are just feeding their families. In particular, they target those who use extreme measures of fishing, such as poisoning the river with Japanese pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum), which causes fish to float to surface and makes them easy to catch. They lecture about refraining from needless killing, and taking life only when it is necessary to survive, and so on. Because they dress and speak in a manner that resembles a Buddhist priest, they are usually not immediately recognized as yōkai. It is only until later, after departing, that something seems off or strange and you realize that the person you thought was a priest was in fact a yōkai.

non sequiter: Hey, we had a pretty cool Hunters Moon tonight!

A really lazy Junji Ito entry today. A Top 15 list of his strongest characters. (It's by Anime Priest, so it's part of today's theme.)

It would take up a lot of my time to dig up some of my Preacher comics. Such as these.

So instead, here is a picture of one of Hellboy.

I've been averaging 3-4 weddings a month lately. Good for the pocketbook. This was my garb at one of them.

Finally, how about a Gatcha? Not sure who it is, but it could be a priest, I reckon.

More stuff tomorrow...

Eko Eko Azarak!

As alluded at the end of yesterday's blog, I have a new obsession to look out for. Last August, while wandering through Nakano Broadway, I saw a poster for some spooky looking display.

Years and years ago, I recall seeing a few minutes of a movie on the tube in the wee hours of something called Eko Eko Azarak. I had no idea what I was watching but the title stuck in my head. Now thanks to this display, I know what it is. Since photos of the artwork were taboo, I bought a set of twenty postcards and I'll present one a day for twenty days and fill in the gaps with other
Eko-static delights. Here's today's postcard. (Gee, it looks familiar.)

I'll elaborate on the manga, anime and movies at a later date. For now, I'll start with the actual Wiccan chant (scammed from Wikipedia.

Eko, eko, Azarak
Eko, eko, Zomelak
Bazabi lacha bachabe
Lamac cahi achababe
Karrellyos
Lamac lamac Bachalyas
Cabahagy sabalyos
Baryolos
Lagoz atha cabyolas
Samahac atha famolas
Hurrahya!

(Note the author of this blog refuses to take responsibility for any demons one might conjure up after reading the above chant. Discretion is advised.)

I don't have a Witch-related Movie Pamphlet handy so I'll use this one that I acquired today. Who knows, the above chant may cause him to appear.

I like the use of the red background.

And the stories that started it all...

Which reminds me, the new version of the movie has finally been released but is only playing in one cinema downtown, I should go catch it before it disappears.

No UFO Catcher stuff today, rather here's a pair of Hairy Harry socks.

As for today's treat, this little pad of post-its came with a coffee or something. I don't remember.

Today's video treat is as follows:
Luna is this Korean gal who plays classic rock on a Gayageum. Going with a witchy theme, here is Black Magic Woman by Santana.

More Witches and Warlocks tomorrow...

I Need Some Hot Stuff Baby Tonight!

Ages ago, I won this HOT STUFF Dart Board at UFO Catch. Back when it was easier to win (I'd milked this one place for huge bags full of prizes weekly over the last few years...but they've changed formats, Dang!), I won several sets of Darts that I would use or give to friends. Alas, the darts didn't last long; hard to believe that they would be of inferior quality.

Of all the Harvey Comics (that I rarely bought but often read at others' homes) I always liked Hot Stuff the best. He was this mischievous little Devil with a sentient pitchfork! Casper was too wimpy, as were Wendy and even Spooky. Even though he wore asbestos diapers, one could always count on Hot Stuff to fry some guys butt at least once each story.

As seen in this cartoon intro for Casper's 60's show, Hot Stuff never got any media coverage, ghosts and witches were okay for Saturday Morning Cartoons, but a little devil was too much for prudish network execs. For that matter, Hot Stuff paraphernalia wasn't in vogue in the 60's, but if you want to track down some recent Hot Stuff stuff, try Dark Horse.

A grudge match I'd love to see: Hot Stuff vs. Hellboy Junior! But I don't think that'd be possible until Hell freezes over. In the meantime, I'll just wait for this to be released on DVD.

In conclusion: It's Karaoke time!!
