Iron Fist

By that title, one would expect a movie about Daniel Rand*, but it actually is the translation of the Japanese title of アイアン・フィスト. The actual title is The Man with the Iron Fists and you can pick it up on BluRay since it was released almost a year ago. Way to get your movies speedily, Japan.

(*this guy)
I knew absolutely nothing about this movie going into it and since it's here for a limited time only, I picked up an advanced ticket. Glad I did for I got these cool stickers:

This is my favourite. (Click on it to Bautista-size it.)

Here is the mini-promo sheet for it.

The movie is very violent, very nasty, very fun and very dumb in a good way. Highly recommended to fans of the HK/Chinese Kung Fu Chop-socky Western genre. Russell Crowe is great, as is Lucy Liu - Meeeow! This RCA RZA guy is pretty good too!

Now where is my actual Iron Fist movie?

Unfortunately, I can't enter a cinema without buying some more Sadako stuff. This time I picked up another clear file and won a mini-iPhone cleaner doodad.

But best of all, I popped into the neighbouring UFO Catch spot and won a Sadako pop-up game! Woohoo!

This will be fun when Halloween rolls around!!

More Swag.

I've been incommunicado of late due to my monitor's decision to take a swan dive. I bought a new (used) one today and those extra few inches make all the difference! (Insert obvious punchline here.)

I saw Django the other day and I can see how Tarantino won the Screenplay Oscar. Of course, if he'd eliminated the "N" word, there'd only be about 20 minutes of dialogue. My favourite part of the movie was the running gag about German Christopher Waltz being told to speak English when he was far more eloquent with the language than the native-born speakers. Anyway, bloody great bloody movie.

While I was there I picked up a few more Oz goods for I've had a few requests since my last post.

This is a very nice book jacket so you can read the most tawdry yarn and seem intelligent.

Finley is far cuter than I had imagined. I would really like a stuffed flying baboon though.

Yet another mini-towel, a key-chain and several charms.

This is a charm package where you get one of six different ones. I got a monkey, I'll be keeping it.

If any of these strike your fancy, let me know. You may have to wait a while to get your goodies, I am notoriously late with sending stuff. (I'm in the process of setting up a Paypal account. As much as I trust those on the receiving end, the last time I sent an Oz care package, I received nothing in return. I'm generally very generous but this loot is much more expensive.)

I'll show off the Program tomorrow, I hope...

Let's Check In With Chiaki!

Advisory: if anyone checks out this post, I am certain there were some photos or YouTubes attached. No idea where the heck they are now.

We all remember our favourite psychotic school girl, 栗山千明 Chiaki Kuriyama, from Battle Royale

and Kill Bill, don't we?

Since then she's become a Youkai ,

a huckster for makeup and other goodies such as the Uniqlo Brat-op,

a mooner

and a Geisha!

Now she's become a full-on J-Pop star! When the heck did that happen?

Keep on surprising us, Chiaki!

Mmmm, Sukiyaki Django.

The latest hot movie in North America is a Western called 3:10 to Yuma starring Batman & Cinderella Man (now that's a Dynamic Duo!) It's taken the #1 spot away from Rob Zombie's Halloween and that must be some accomplishment. Check out the site and see what all the hubbub is bub.

But this western looks pretty damned cool, too. スキヤキ・ウエスタン ジャンゴ, (a remake of an old Spaghetti Western, Django) is directed by 三池 崇史 (Takeshi Miike) so you know it's going to be violent. Surprisingly, the dialogue will all be in English! Less surprisingly, Quentin Tarantino has a cameo in it. Let's hope his previous super-sucky onscreen portrayals were a fluke and he's actually good in this.

You can always play the game if you're so inclined. (Type what you see on the screen to shoot the bad guys. Warning: it is case sensitive, so you must Capitalize letters, but you don't have to worry about the space bar.) I made it to level four before I died. The theme song that plays when you visit the site is extremely catchy. It has now become my screen saver.

By the way, my mom used to make Sukiyaki when we were kids. It was pretty yummy, though I suspect it wasn't totally authentic. For one thing, I don't think you should use Uncle Ben's Instant Rice.

Mike's Mini Movie Moments.

I took advantage of relatively inexpensive movie opportunities to catch a few flicks while home. On the flight to Canada, I only caught one movie, opting instead to read.

(ASIDE: I read Spider Robinson's Very Bad Deaths, really very good seemingly-autobiographical SF-thriller: think Telepath + Hippy + Cop meets Hannibal Lector.)

What I did see on the flight was Lucky You starring the Hulk, Boo Radley & Gertie. Pleasant, predictable & ponderous parable of Poker. Watch the Cincinnati Kid instead. (I'd take Ann Margret over Drew any day!)

New to DVD is Hot Fuzz and Clerks 2. Hot Fuzz was not as good as Shaun of the Dead, but it did have its jocular moments. Great extras on movie making though. I'll have to rewatch Clerks to refresh my memory, but I may prefer the sequel. Witty dialogue, great characterization and I found the romantic aspect as good as Chasing Amy.

Bourne to be Wild was the Ultimatum of action flicks. Thrills, chills and spills, but my main criticism is the constant use of the "SHAKY CAM". A few times would be okay, but expect seizures aplenty to strike the populus who view this. I also fear that we're in for a new trend of copycat movies using "Epilepto-vision" as the new "Bullet time".

It was a boy's night out to go see the Simpsons Movie and after a few pints, we were ready. Unfortunately, the paper had mixed up the times and the next show wasn't for another hour. So we all went to see Ratatouille. Excellent alternative, but I couldn't blubber like a school girl in front of my mates. It's over here in Japan under the title of: Remi's Delicious Restaurant. It might be worth seeing a dubbed version as a comparison.

The next night I caught the Simps and found it to be a superior episode with a few naughty sight gags but not quite cinematic enough to warrant a theatrical release. I'll see it when it comes to Japan next November though...It IS the Simpsons after all!

I managed to get to the Bloor to see Grindhouse. Rodrigues' movie, Planet Terror was brilliant. I loved every creepy moment of it. Tarantino's Death Proof, on the other hand, talked and talked and talked with some intermittent action thrown in. Good finale though. They plan to split the movies up for overseas release (no such thing as a double feature over here) so I may catch Planet Terror again for the extra footage. I can hold out for Death Proof until it's on DVD though.

Finally on the flight back, I forgot a book, so I watched all three movies. The Last Mimsy was pretty dopey, but passable kiddy SF. Blades of Glory was very dumb but very funny, the Frat Pack strikes again. And every flight needs your typical embittered ghetto kids who triumph over all odds to win the championship; this time it was Pride with swim trunks.

Stay tuned for the theatrical highlight of my trip, a certain nod to Sam Raimi. (Oooh, how enigmatic!)
