A Stick with an 'orses 'ead 'andle.

Sadly I must announce the demise of one of my treasured items from my youth. A *Stick with an 'orses 'ead 'andle (*shoehorn) has been with me since high school and I can remember performing "The Lion and Albert" at a coffee house with this stick in 'and. Sure my accent couldn't hold a candle to Stanley Holloway but I gave it a whirl.

I accidently stepped on it on my way out to take the garbage to the recycling bin. Grrr! It's a clean break and may be salvageable, I'll take it to school tomorrow to see if it can be repaired. Meanwhile, listen to the aforementioned Stanley Holloway tell the tale.

Read along:

The Lion and Albert

There's a famous seaside place called Blackpool,
That's noted for fresh air and fun,
And Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom
Went there with young Albert, their son.

A grand little lad was young Albert,
All dressed in his best; quite a swell
With a stick with an 'orse's 'ead 'andle,
The finest that Woolworth's could sell.

They didn't think much to the Ocean:
The waves, they was fiddlin' and small,
There was no wrecks and nobody drownded,
Fact, nothing to laugh at at all.

So, seeking for further amusement,
They paid and went into the Zoo,
Where they'd Lions and Tigers and Camels,
And old ale and sandwiches too.

There were one great big Lion called Wallace;
His nose were all covered with scars —
He lay in a somnolent posture,
With the side of his face on the bars.

Now Albert had heard about Lions,
How they was ferocious and wild  —
To see Wallace lying so peaceful,
Well, it didn't seem right to the child.

So straightway the brave little feller,
Not showing a morsel of fear,
Took his stick with its 'orse's 'ead 'andle
And pushed it in Wallace's ear.

You could see that the Lion didn't like it,
For giving a kind of a roll,
He pulled Albert inside the cage with 'im,
And swallowed the little lad 'ole.

Then Pa, who had seen the occurrence,
And didn't know what to do next,
Said 'Mother! Yon Lion's 'et Albert',
And Mother said 'Well, I am vexed!'

Then Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom —
Quite rightly, when all's said and done —
Complained to the Animal Keeper,
That the Lion had eaten their son.

The keeper was quite nice about it;
He said 'What a nasty mishap.
Are you sure that it's your boy he's eaten?'
Pa said "Am I sure? There's his cap!'

The manager had to be sent for.
He came and he said 'What's to do?'
Pa said 'Yon Lion's 'et Albert,
'And 'im in his Sunday clothes, too.'

Then Mother said, 'Right's right, young feller;
I think it's a shame and a sin,
For a lion to go and eat Albert,
And after we've paid to come in.'

The manager wanted no trouble,
He took out his purse right away,
Saying 'How much to settle the matter?'
And Pa said "What do you usually pay?'

But Mother had turned a bit awkward
When she thought where her Albert had gone.
She said 'No! someone's got to be summonsed' —
So that was decided upon.

Then off they went to the P'lice Station,
In front of the Magistrate chap;
They told 'im what happened to Albert,
And proved it by showing his cap.

The Magistrate gave his opinion
That no one was really to blame
And he said that he hoped the Ramsbottoms
Would have further sons to their name.

At that Mother got proper blazing,
'And thank you, sir, kindly,' said she.
'What waste all our lives raising children
To feed ruddy Lions? Not me!'

Happy 91st Birthday!

Had my mother not passed away over 6 years ago, she would have turned 91 today. I scammed this picture from her obit and for other pictures, be sure to go to the label at the bottom of this post entitled "mom" or just click that link.

When I was home, I met up with a High School pal with whom I recently reconnected. (Thanks Colin and June!) We reminisced at length and I asked his wife to bring me our Yearbooks. She found Grades 9-12 but not 13, which is too bad for it had all my good pics.

Here are some High School highlights...

No directory of names here so you'll just have to figure out which one I am.

I never did achieve my ambition to "hand in assignments on time".

Although I was strangely absent from the photos, I was in the Chess Club though never on our championship team.

Yay, finally I made it into a Yearbook photo!

I was also in the Cards Club and we would play bridge almost daily for a few hours.

Like my brother before me, I joined the Classics Club where we partook in Toga Parties long before they were popularized in Animal House.

If you squint, you can see me in the Band. Below there's a closeup, can you spot me?

My brother Mark was a member of this Barbershop Quartet Septet.

Here is the album they put out when the renamed themselves, "The New City Singers".

Finally, I have no idea who these people are but I wanted to include the photo because it is so very wrong.

Happy Birthday Mom, thanks for putting up with my hijinks during High School. What with the Band and the Chess, Classics, and Cards Clubs, I was quite the rebel!
Too bad I don't have our Grade 13 Yearbook. I was also a Prefect and played a villain in the melodrama, The Secret of the Spyglass!

Check, mate!

En route back from my Car event yesterday, we popped into a warehouse-style toy store and bought a bunch of stuff, including this for May the 4th Be with you Day. I found a Chess Set discounted from 5800 to 1280 yen.

It includes characters from both the Dark Side and the Light Side of the Force, appropriately using Storm Troopers and Clone Troopers for the pawns.

Here are the rest of the Dark Siders. As the King, rightly so is Darth Vader.

There aren't a lot of nasty Dark Side ladies, so rather than call Kylo Ren a Queen, let's refer to him as second in command.

As Knights, we have the father-son team of Jango and Boba Fett.

The Bishops are General Hux and Captain Phasma.

I love the choice of Rooks. Darth Maul and General Grievous.

The Light Siders are headed up by Luke Skywalker as King and his daughter(?) Rey as Queen (Princess?).

I suppose Luke's sister who is formally a Princess never graduated to the rank of Queen so Leia is relegated to the role of Bishop along with former Stormtrooper, Finn.

The Knights are well chosen with Han Solo and Chewbacca flanking everyone with their fancy "L move".

Obviously, R2-D2 and BB8 are chosen as Rooks due to their tendency to move in a straight line.

Here is what the board looks like. I'm certain once a game is in progress, it will get very crowded in the center, especially if Chewbacca faces off against Grievous.

I haven't played in years and for decades prior to that when I was on our High School's chess team, though I was never a top-six player, I was ranked about 10th. I'll keep this set in my car and if anyone is ever up for a game, I'll gladly match my Force against yours!

A Parody?

No, a Paratea. What appears to be a relatively new brand of tea, Paradise Tropical TEA, is a rather tasty and presumably healthy tea produced by UCC. What caught my eye was not the blend of four flowers: Marigold, Rose, Cornflower and Swizzleflower (?) nor the catchphrase: "You can enjoy the tropical aroma. It's just like a paradise!"

No, what I found intriguing are the 6 different animal bottle caps that you can get. Place it over your freshly bought pet-bottle and it can easily twist it off. Useful if you're at all arthritic and cute too. As you can see, there is a tiger, rabbit, bear, zebra leopard or frog.

If you've got a spare 11 minutes, here is Meatloaf's most famous tune.

Ah, it's just like I'm back in High School!

Tragical Magical Mystery.

I'm pretty sure this is one of the signs of the Apocalypse:

What do you get when you add together several members of AKB48, SKE48 & SDN48? It's either some wacky new version of math using base 48 or we may just have landed at マジスカ学園 or Majisuka Gakuen !

Team Hormone is a Yankee gang in Majisuka Gakuen. (Serious High School?) They are one of the lower level gangs in Majisuka. All they seem to be doing all day in school is eating hormone-rich foods, even in class. The foods they eat are also referred to as Yakiniku (in Kansai-ben, Horumon means “discarded goods” and refers to the innards which are the cheapest type of meat).

Not surprisingly, the above inspired a Sequel as you can see in the following:

(Though I must admit that this is not a bad version of the tune.)

I Love Candy!

We're all familiar with SCTV for who didn't watch them in their heyday in the late 70s? It's impossible to choose a favourite, so I'll just pick John Candy because, pound for pound, he is one funny guy.

(Tangent time:) Back in High School, one of my duties in the Nerd elite (Chess Club, Bridge Club, Classics Club) was as a Prefect. As our main responsibility, we'd patrol the Cafeteria during lunch. I was there during the great rainfall of frogs when our dissected buddies were liberated (though still dead) with frogs showing up in unsuspecting sandwiches, the Coke machine and being pelted back & forth across the room. I was not exactly authoritarian that day for I recall tossing a few amphibians myself. I also remember wearing less than traditional garb on a few occasions; at least twice I wore a toga while promoting the Classics Club's annual Roman orgy festival--remember this was in the early 70s long before Belushi made toga parties popular. And in '77, I paraded around in full pirate garb, stabbing apple cores with my sword and making a complete fool of myself when I became a lifesize billboard for my role as Squire Simon Cataract in The Secret of the Spyglass!

Why the trip down memory lane? Because in gratitude for all our hard work as Prefects, we all were treated to the big city of Toronto for dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory and a show of Second City at the Firehall Theatre. At that time, among the cast were Peter & Dan Ackroyd, Dave Thomas, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, Gilda Radner, Catherine O'Hara, Andrea Martin and the immortal John Candy. So years before he entertained the masses as Johnny LaRue I saw him on stage with the rest of the gang!

Apart from making people laugh and eating, John also had a passion for Football (not that super-bowl crap or soccer...CFL) and he even went so far as to buy a part of the Toronto Argonauts with Bruce McNall and Wayne Gretzky! Back in '91, I got to see Toronto kick Hamilton's collective ass and watch the Blues Brothers/Elwood Revue Show play at half-time!!

From the CFL archive page...
July 18, 1991 – The Argos open the season against Hamilton in front of more than 41,000 people. The day featured the debut of Raghib “Rocket” Ismail and a stellar halftime show featuring the famous Blues Brothers.

Those are my personal encounters with JC, if you click the SCTV or SNL label below, you can read about my further encounters with various members of those elite comedy teams.

The Impossible Dream.

Back in the day (that day being the early 80s) when I was auditioning, I used "The Impossible Dream" as my musical number and Cromwell's inquiry from "A Man For All Seasons"* as my dramatic piece. The problem was that I never had the nads to audition and ended up with an unrequited theatrical career. I did some bit roles for the Bramalea Little Theatre in the 90s (a crappy melodrama where I played a KKK guy and I was Antonio in "Much Ado About Nothing".

Regardless, I still have a soft part in my heart for "The Impossible Dream." Too bad, I can't find it at any local Karaoke joints, I'd love to take another crack at it. That being said, here is ドン・キホーテ (Don Quixote) as an anime. I hope you enjoy it.

*CROMWELL But, Gentlemen of the jury, there are many kinds of silence. Consider first the silence of a man when he is dead. Let us say we go into the room where he is lying; and let us say it is in the dead of night-there's nothing like darkness for sharpening the ear; and we listen. What do we hear? Silence. What does it betoken, this silence? Nothing. This is silence, pure and simple. But consider another case. Suppose I were to draw a dagger from my sleeve and make to kill the prisoner with it, and suppose their lordships there, instead of crying out for me to stop or crying out for help to stop me, maintained their silence. That would betoken! It would betoken a willingness that 1 should do it, and under the law they would be guilty with me. So silence can, according to circumstances, speak. Consider, now, the circumstances of the prisoner's silence. The oath was put to good and faithful subjects up and down the country and they had declared His Grace's title to be just and good. And when it came to the prisoner he refused. He calls this silence. Yet is there a man in this court, is there a man in this country, who does not know Sir Thomas More's opinion of the King's title? Of course not! But how can that be? Because this silence betokened-nay, this silence was not silence at all but most eloquent denial.

Come to think of it, I should take another crack at this speech someday as well.

Swing Girls!

I first heard about the movie, スウィングガールズ (Suwingu Gāruzu) in '04 but back then I was living out in the sticks and didn't make it out to the city often enough to catch it in the cinema.

Today for my daily Facebook wtf video, I showed this:

I was so enthralled that I decided to watch the entire thing on YouTube. I was glad I did and you can too by starting here at #1 and following to #11. (Bonus: it has English Subtitles that are really well done except for the odd typo.)

I was disappointed that the Boar scene wasn't in this version, I suspect it was a Director's Cut or a Deleted Scene. After the success of the movie (#8 in Japan), the girls began touring the country.
For example,

I only wish DVDs weren't so expensive here or I'd pick up my own copy. Hopefully I can find it used somewhere someday.

Getting The Strap

Back when we were in Elementary School, corporal punishment was still allowed and when one did something really naughty, you'd have to see the VP, hold out your hand and receive a few whacks. Of course, my older brother never had to go. He was the brainy one who skipped a few grades and stayed out of trouble. My younger brother was less so and developed calluses for the amount of times he went.

Me, I kept relatively low key, but because I was the smallest and youngest in all my classes (a preemie & I started kindergarten when I was 4 1/2 due to a Christmas birth), I had to make up for it through sarcasm, nasty sense of humour and pulling outrageous stunts. I only got beat up once when I picked a fight with a former best friend. Who knew that fighting Captain Kirk style couldn't defend you against a clenched fist? Fortunately, I had also befriended the head of the Football team who came to my rescue. I recall him holding my opponent by the shirt and slamming him against a tree with each word, "Don't...ever...hit...my...little...buddy...again!" (Two years later, my protector stole my first ever girlfriend who dumped me when puberty hit. Ah well, what can ya do?) This took place after school & off school property, so nothing untoward happened to any participants.

...But...I think I went once for a snowball incident. We had an organized snowball fight out on the soccer field with two teams lined up and everything. Then, while the Shop Teacher was explaining the rules, I nailed him in the back of the head with a surprisingly accurate shot. I certainly impressed my peers, but he was less than amused and I gained a few welts on my palm for it.

If I may change the subject, here are a few Straps that you can get with a ValueMeal at マクドナルド (McDonalds) right now. Here, amongst others, is an extremely lame Commercial for them. The Happi Setto ad is also uber-lame, I don't think I'll be collecting those.

They look good enough to eat, don't they? Check out a couple of old commercials McDonalds aired a few years back:

Yummy!

Rats and Other Pesky Rodents.

Back in my high school Chess Club days, whenever something went awry, one was wont to utter, "Rats!" and that was shortly followed up with "...and other pesky rodents" by a fellow chessophile. I can't recall why, that's just the way we rolled in the Chess club. There's a reason were the #1 team in Canada for two years running, "Don't Mess with CPSS Chess!"

Today's Pixar pic is from レミRatatouilleーのおいしいレストラン (Remi's delicious restaurant) which others may recognize as Ratatouille (which according to the spell-check, I got correct the first time!) A handful of drinking buddies went out on the piss one night with the intention of seeing a violent shoot-em-up thriller but whatever we had planned to see was ill-timed so we opted for the rodent-fest instead. I probably enjoyed it more than my posse, but we all exited satisfied.

I've been going on lately about Japan's dubbing of all recent animated features into Japanese and not offering a show in English. This is a fairly recent phenomenon, for I recall seeing Mr. Incredible in English in Sendai. On the other hand, if the dubbing is as good as the job done in this trailer, then my fears are assuaged and I'll stop harping on the subject.

Speaking of Rats, John Ratzenberger has had a voice part in all of Pixar's feature films made to date. His roles include:
* Hamm the Piggy Bank in Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999) and Toy Story 3 (2010)
* P.T. Flea, the Circus Ring Leader in A Bug's Life (1998)
* The Abominable Snowman in Monsters, Inc. (2001)
* The school of Moonfish in Finding Nemo (2003)
* The Underminer in The Incredibles (2004)
* Mack the truck in Cars (2006) and Cars 2 (2011)
* Mustafa the Waiter in Ratatouille (2007)
* John in WALL-E (2008)
* Tom the construction worker in Up (2009)

I wonder if they use the same Japanese guy to do all his roles?

Surprisingly, I only have one item from the movie, a little phone strap that I picked up for a buck or two a while back. Cute, ain't it, for a flea ridden chef, that is?

If you dig into my profile, you'll see that I've added a ton of blogs that I follow. I also need to start raking in the cash, so I've added a little Amazon doohickey that is bound to get me rich beyond my wildest dreams! So anytime you buy anything through that link, you'll be helping a poor blogger pay for all his obsessions! (I'm still working out the linkages, so be patient.)

Anakin Anke-to.

Imagine it's May 1977 and you're going to see some "Uproariously Lusty Entertainment" à la Slap Shot and there's a sneak preview as well for a new movie called Alaska.

Or were you one of the lucky few invited to a Private Screening at the MGM Studio Screening Room?

Well then, how would you fill out the following アンケート? (anke-to=questionnaire-click it to em-Biggs-en it or print your own copy.)

Here's how I would have responded back in 1977:
1. Male; High School Student
2. 16-20
3. 2X per month
4. King Kong (1933)/ Jaws
5. Annie Hall; THX 1138; King Kong (maybe referring to 1976 version); Silver Streak; American Graffiti; Airport 77; The Pink Panther Strikes Again; Rocky (Aside: my High School nickname...of course I'd seen it. During the "running up the Steps scene", I jumped up and did the same, much to the amusement of my friends and bemusement of other cinema goers.)
6. Excellent
7. Highly recommended
8. Darth Vader; Han Solo; Ben Kenobi; Princess Leia Organa; Governor Moff Tarkin; Luke Skywalker
9. Chewbacca the Wookie; Artoo-Detoo; See Threepio
10. Greedo; Jawas; Biggs and Porkins; Cantina musicians; Stormtroopers
11. Darth Vader
12. Darth Vader - Ben Kenobi light saber fight
13. See all the other scenes in #12 plus...Holographic Chess Game; any scene with Han & Chewbacca; Darth Vader strangling Moff Tarkin with the Force.
14. Luke was a whiner at the beginning of the movie.
15. As my friend pointed out, "When telling Obi-Wan and Luke how fast the Millennium Falcon is, Han says it "made the Kessel run in under 12 parsecs." A parsec is not a measure of time. It is a measure of distance (approximately 3.26 light years or just over 19 trillion miles.)" I told him, it was just Han talking bravado. This is the official explanation: "However, he was actually referring to the shorter route he was able to travel by skirting the nearby Maw black hole cluster, thus making the run in under the standard distance."
16. Han Solo and Chewbacca
17. Television; Newspapers
18. Other comments: Even though it was opening day, there were NO lineups and my friend and I sat through it twice!

How would YOU answer?
