Japan has often been deemed a xenophobic nation, sometimes with cause, but more often than not, it takes a lot of bashing for their views.
Stories like this contribute to outsiders' fear of Japan (it really is safe, people). Items like this contribute to the conception that Japan is fascinated with places outside of their cozy little islands, but don't take efforts to assimilate, preferring to take the easy route to travel.
